D2 Visa vs D7 Visa — A Complete Comparison

D2 Visa vs D7 Visa

Portugal offers several residency routes for non-EU nationals, and two of the most popular are the D2 (Entrepreneur Visa) and D7 (Passive Income Visa). While they share the same end goal — lawful residency and a pathway to citizenship — their requirements, obligations, and suitability differ significantly .

What Is the D2 Visa? The D2 visa is specifically designed for entrepreneurial activity. Applicants must demonstrate a viable business plan and intention to actively manage or develop a company within Portugal . It is suitable for:

  • Entrepreneurs — Individuals establishing new Portuguese companies or developing entrepreneurial activities within Portugal's economy
  • Existing Business Owners — Shareholders and business proprietors expanding current operations into Portuguese markets
  • Professional Service Providers — Freelancers and independent contractors offering specialised services
  • Liberal Professionals — Qualified practitioners with specific professional credentials relevant to the Portuguese market

Key requirement: Active business presence and a genuine business plan.

What Is the D7 Visa? The D7 visa suits applicants who intend to live in Portugal and can demonstrate stable passive income — often from pensions, rentals, dividends, or other financial assets . It is suitable for:

  • Retirees and pensioners
  • Individuals with rental income, dividends, or other passive income
  • Applicants with predictable recurring income

Key requirement: Sufficient passive income from outside Portugal (approximately €820 per month for a single applicant) .

Which Visa Is Best for You?

Choose the D2 Visa if you:

  • Want to start or run a business in Portugal
  • Are a freelancer with Portuguese clients or contracts
  • Are a consultant or independent professional
  • Plan to actively contribute to the Portuguese economy
  • Want to create jobs in Portugal

Choose the D7 Visa if you:

  • Have steady passive income (pensions, investments, rental income)
  • Are retired or semi-retired
  • Don't plan to work actively in Portugal
  • Want a simpler application process with no business plan required

Can You Switch Between Visas?

It is possible to switch between residency routes if your circumstances change. However, it is always better to choose the right one from the start to avoid complications.

Both Lead to Citizenship

Both routes lead to citizenship after 5 years of legal residency . For the D7, you'll need to demonstrate basic Portuguese language skills (A2 level) at the citizenship stage. The D2 requires the same language proficiency.

Need Help Deciding?

If you're still unsure which route is best for you, consider:

  • Your primary purpose for moving to Portugal
  • Your income sources
  • Your long-term goals
  • Your willingness to run an active business

At D2 Visa Plans, we specialise in the D2 entrepreneur route. If you're ready to start a business in Portugal, we can help you build a business plan that gets you approved.
